Identification Guide: Is it a White Oak?
There are two main groupings of oak trees, the red oak and white oak. White oak is an umbrella term that encompasses many individual trees.
Bark
Unlike the darker, deeply furrowed bark of Red Oak, White Oak features a lighter gray bark with a flaky or “platy” texture. On mature trees, these plates often overlap, giving the trunk a slightly shaggy appearance.
Leaves
White oak leaves typically have 7–9 rounded lobes and grow 5–9 inches long. If the tips are pointed or bristled, you are likely looking at a Red Oak. In the fall, White Oak leaves turn a deep red-wine color before fading to brown and often remain on the tree longer into winter.
Fruit (Acorns)
White oak acorns begin as a light green and darken to brown as they mature. They tend to be sweeter than Red Oak acorns. The cap has a light brown, warty texture and typically covers about one-quarter of the nut.

How to Distinguish White Oak from Red Oak
There are several key features that help distinguish white oak species from red oaks. White oak leaves have rounded lobes, while red oak leaves typically have pointed or bristled tips. Their acorns are generally sweeter and germinate in the fall, with the fruit maturing within one year of flowering.
The bark of white oak is typically light gray and scaly, compared to the darker, more deeply furrowed bark of red oak. These differences become more noticeable as the tree matures. Common white oak species found in Indiana include swamp white oak, bur oak, overcup oak, chestnut oak, chinkapin oak, and post oak.
