Identification Guide: Is it a Black Cherry?
Identifying Black Cherry is relatively simple once you know its unique “burnt potato chip” bark and distinct leaf structure.
Bark
On mature trees, the bark is very dark (almost black) and broken into small, brittle, upturned scales. This unique texture is often described by foresters as looking like “burnt potato chips” stuck to the tree.
Leaves
Black Cherry leaves are narrow and oval with finely serrated edges. A key secret for identification is the rusty-colored fuzz found along the mid-rib on the underside of the leaf near the stem. In autumn, the foliage turns a brilliant yellow to orange.
Fruit (Cherries)
The tree produces small, dark purple-to-black cherries in late summer. While bitter to humans, they are a high-value food source for forest birds and mammals.

How to Distinguish Black Cherry from Chokecherry

Size and Form: Black Cherry grows into a tall, straight forest tree, often reaching 60–80 feet. Chokecherries and other wild varieties typically remain small, shrub-like trees with twisting trunks.
The Bark: Mature Black Cherry has the distinct “scaly” bark mentioned above, whereas Chokecherry bark stays relatively smooth and develops horizontal “lenticels” (slits) similar to a Birch tree.
